Prospective Graduate Students
Openings P.T. Mather's new lab in the Syracuse Biomaterials Institute, Syracuse University, is devoted to functional polymeric materials. The group has received funding from multiple sources to expand in the area of polymeric biomaterials and talented and collaborative graduate students are sought to pursue the following projects. (1) Biodegradable nanocomposites. We have developed a process to create nanofiber-based composites with outstanding properties. In this PhD project, the graduate student researcher will explore the applicability of such materials to medical applications, particularly the influence of nanostructure on biodegradation, biocompatibility, drug elution and surface properties. (2) Shape Memory for Active Tissue Engineering Scaffolds. In collaboration with Dr. Henderson's group, this project will involve the development of "smart" shape-memory scaffolds for tissue engineering that impart prescribed stresses on cells for mechanical stimulation. James (Jay) Henderson's new lab in the Syracuse Biomaterials Institute, Syracuse University, focuses on understanding how biomechanical, biochemical, and topological signals regulate the differentiation and phenotypic expression of musculoskeletal cells with the goal of developing cell-based therapies for musculoskeletal repair and regeneration. Graduate student openings exist in the areas of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. The projects provide opportunity for research that includes, but is not limited to: cell and tissue culture and engineering; bioreactor design and fabrication; cell and tissue mechanostimulation; biomechanical tissue testing; analysis of cells and tissues using techniques from molecular biology, biochemistry, and histology and immunohistochemistry; manipulation of tissue and embryonic progenitor cells; atomic force microscopy; finite element modeling; and mechanical and optical micromanipulation of developing tissues. Application Process Applications can be filled out online at http://gradsch.syr.edu/howtoapply.htm. Click on "Apply Online", create an account, and proceed with the application process. You will need to select the graduate program of interest (Bioenginering, Chemical Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, or Physics) and you should mention the Syracuse Biomaterials Institute in your "personal statement". Questions can be directed to Karen Low at kplow@syr.edu. Return to News and Announcements |
